Safe Sleep Fatherhood Outreach Program
In 2015, a new initiative proposed by the 33rd Grand Polemarch Thomas L. Battles and sponsored by the National Health and Wellness Committee of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., is the Safe Sleep Fatherhood Outreach Program. This program is a collaborative effort with the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) to educate Kappa membership in an effort to build alliance within communities to assist in the education and awareness activities around Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related causes of infant death. Moreover, the initiative emphasizes the important role men have in being able to teach other men such as fathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers and other community stakeholders.

Each year, about 3,500 infants die from SIDS and other sleep-related causes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The goal of the NICHD–Kappa Fatherhood Initiative is to train 20,000 members in 2016.
